The word towel describes any type of cloth that is used to wipe, clean or dry something. If you need to dry yourself of after a bath or clean household items, then you are most likely going to use a towel for the job. Towels of various shapes and sizes have been used in many cultures but towels as we know them today most likely originated in Turkey.
There are many different types of towels available today, which is dictated by what the towel is used for. For each and every task there is a type of towel available which decides what the shape of the towel should be and how thick the fabric should be. Towels are generally made out of cotton because of cottons high absorption capability.
Bath towels are probably the most commonly used towel, followed by kitchen towels. Bath towels along with beach towels are the largest variety of towels that are generally used. Both bath towels and beach towels are used to dry one self and beach towels are also used for lying on the sand. Another type of towel is the foot towel which is put on the floor of some bath rooms so as to not get the floor wet after a bath.
Some more examples would be, the hand towel used to dry off the hands, kitchen or dish towel as its know in some societies’ and as the name implies it is used for various kitchen duties, and of course the most common of them all the paper towel, also mostly used for kitchen work, popular because of its disposability. Another example would be the sport towel used by sportsmen and women.
Nowadays towels are made from different type of materials, mainly cotton, cotton blends and rayon and even silk. Another type of cotton towel that is back in popularity is the flour sack towel, so called because it has its roots in, yes flour sacks. During the depression, people made clothes and towels from empty flour sacks which were very good and comfortable.
